Studies in the Novel publishes essays on all aspects of the novel from its origins to the present. We particularly encourage essays that adopt innovative theoretical, cultural, comparative, or interdisciplinary approaches. We also welcome submissions on newly discovered works and novelists from around the globe, as well as canonical texts and popular genres (including children’s literature, mass market novels, the graphic novel, and experimental long fiction). We do not accept work composed with large-language models (LLMs) or generative artificial intelligence (A.I.).
Please submit articles as MS Word files and eliminate any personal identifying information; we follow a double-blind peer review process. Manuscripts should be approximately 7,000 to 9,000 words in length, inclusive of endnotes and Works Cited, and have 1” margins and double-spacing throughout.Although published articles must conform to the 9th edition of the MLA Style Manual, initial submissions can be in other style formats, with the understanding that the article will need to be converted to MLA style if accepted. Whatever style is used for the initial submission, we do ask that a separate Works Cited page is included at the end of the document (as opposed to references solely being cited in footnotes). All copyright permissions must be obtained by the author prior to publication. Any work with components generated by A.I. will be rejected.
All submissions should be sent through our ScholarOne manuscript submission site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sitn. If you do not yet have an account, click on the “Create an Account” tab or on the “Register here” link and follow the 3-step process for creating your account. Editorial decisions are made within approximately four months.
